Description
Research in AI promises to bring huge advances in all aspects of human life, from groundbreaking discoveries in medicine and self-driving cars to the arts. However, it also raises serious ethical concerns.
The goal of the ReAI workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners in the broad area of responsible AI to discuss recent advancements and future perspectives of this rapidly changing field. Special emphasis will be placed on how Greece is tackling these challenges aiming at fostering a community on the topic of responsible AI.
The workshop will focus on the foundations, principles, and practices of responsibly developing and deploying AI systems, addressing issues of fair and unbiased use, transparency, explainability, respect for human autonomy, privacy, accountability, safety and trustworthiness.
Besides covering technical aspects, the workshop will also provide a broader interdisciplinary perspective by including legal, social, and ethical perspectives, aiming to provide participants with a well-rounded understanding of the implications and considerations surrounding AI beyond just its technical implementation.
Topics include but are not limited to
- Bias and fairness in AI systems
- Transparency, interpretability and explainability (XAI)
- AI regulations
- Privacy and accountability
- Use cases
Submission Guidelines
We welcome submissions reporting both mature and on-going research as well as position and vision papers.
Submissions may be of of two types:
- full papers (6-10 pages)
- short papers (2-4 pages)
Each paper will be reviewed by at least two members of the Program Committee on the basis of technical quality, relevance to the topics of the workshop, originality, novelty, significance, and clarity. The review process will be double-blind, so authors should not reveal their identities.
In preparing your manuscripts, follow the ACM SIG Proceedings guidelines available at: http://www.acm.org/publications/article-templates/proceedings-template.html/
All paper submissions will be handled electronically via the Easychair conference management system at the following address: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=setn2024
Attendance and proceedings
To encourage interactions, we will have both longer and flash/pitch-like presentations.
At least one of the authors of each workshop paper must complete a full conference registration and deliver an on-site presentation during the workshop
All accepted Research Track papers will be included in the Conference Proceedings, which will be published by ACM (International Conference Proceedings Series) and be available through the ACM Digital Library (approval pending).

Keynote
Nicolas Kourtellis, Head of Systems AI Lab (SAIL), Telefonica Scientific Research
Title:
Innovating Next-Gen Telco Networks: A Responsible AI Approach
Abstract:
As the telecommunication industry pushes forward with the 5G and 6G networks, several questions arise: How can we overcome the limitations of traditional network management approaches, to facilitate the demands of more advanced networks? How can cloud infrastructure, hierarchical network architectures, and edge computing be leveraged to enhance network performance? What role can AI modeling play to ensure user, data and model privacy, security, fairness, sustainability, and model utility? At Telefonica, we are exploring innovative, responsible AI solutions to these pressing questions. This talk will explore our recent efforts to develop secure, private, fair, and scalable systems, addressing the demands of next-generation networks and applications.
Bio:
Nicolas Kourtellis is Head of the Systems AI Lab (SAIL) at Telefonica Scientific Research, a 25+ researcher team based in Barcelona, Spain. He holds a PhD in Computer Science & Engineering from the University of South Florida, USA (2012) and has over 90 published peer-reviewed papers and 8 filed patents. Currently, he focuses on privacy-preserving, fair, secure AI and federated learning on the edge, modeling/detecting with AI different user online privacy leaks, as well as inappropriate/fraudulent behavior on social media. He executed several research visits in ANL (USA), INRIA (France), Yahoo (Spain/USA), UCL (UK), CUT (Cyprus), AUTH (Greece), FORTH (Greece), and others. He has served in many technical committees of top conferences and journals, and presented his work in top academic and industrial venues including Mobile World Congress 2021 and 2023, Apache Foundation, etc. His work has been covered by major news outlets such as Nature, New York Times, The Atlantic, New Scientist, Washington Post, Wired, and others. In 2022, he was ranked among the World’s Top 2% Scientists (2021) in the list prepared by Elsevier BV, Stanford University, USA.
Panel
Responsible AI Panel
Panel Chair: Lilian Mitrou, Professor, University of the Aegean
Panelists:
- Michail Bletsas: Governor of the National Cybersecurity Authority
- Vassilis Karkatzounis: AI and Cybersecurity Advisor to the Minister of Digital Governance
- Eleni Rethymiotaki: Professor, Law School of the University of Athens, Former President of the National Commission of Bioethics and Technoethics
- Panayiotis Tsaparas: Associate Professor, University of Ioannina and Archimedes/Athena RC
Discussion:
The panel will examine the concept of Responsible AI, focusing on the ethical, legal, and societal responsibilities of the socio-technical systems behind AI. AI systems are not autonomous actors; accountability lies with those who design and deploy them. Panelists will explore how regulatory frameworks like the AI Act shape Responsible AI and the role of fairness in AI design. The discussion will also emphasize the importance of public engagement and AI literacy, ensuring that all stakeholders, including researchers, developers, and policymakers, contribute to the responsible development and use of AI technologies.
